EAST LANSING – The following is a public statement from Kevin McFatridge, Chief Operating Officer of the Michigan State Medical Society, in response to today’s Oakland County Circuit Court ruling extending a preliminary injunction against letting county prosecutors bring charges in abortion cases under Michigan's 1931 law.

“As a Society, we have always been and continue to be opposed to the potential criminalization of physicians and their patients in making health care decisions.  Physicians and their patients should be free to consider, discuss, and pursue medical procedures guided by a physician’s best medical judgment and a patient’s physical health and safety.  The decision by the court today protects this relationship in Michigan and helps bring legal clarity for both doctors and their patients.”
