Starting January 1, Medicare Claims must include the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier

Wednesday, January 8, 2020

The transition period from the Health Insurance Claim Number (HICN) to the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) ended December 31, 2019. All Medicare claims submitted in 2020 require the use of the MBI. Claims submitted with a HICN will reject, causing additional costs and unnecessary delays in Medicare payment. For rejected claims, practices need to correct the claim and resubmit it. MSMS has been informed that many Michigan providers continue to report the HICN. In fact, rejections for 2020 claims that do not include the MBI are significantly higher in Michigan than in other states.

Physicians should consult their billing offices to ensure Medicare claims are being properly submitted and reimbursed.
