The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) this past weekend formally welcomed Cheryl Gibson Fountain, MD, FACOG, as the new President of the Society. Doctor Gibson Fountain, an obstetrician and gynecologist from Grosse Point Park, is a graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
Doctor Gibson Fountain is the Society's first ever African-American female president. She is Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oakland University - William Beaumont School of Medicine and Attending Physician at Beaumont Health, Grosse Pointe / Royal Oak.
"Physicians serve as patients' greatest advocates, and the Michigan State Medical Society exists to equip and empower physicians in that essential mission," said Gibson Fountain. "MSMS provides training, resources, and advocacy that make an incredible difference for physicians across the state, and works day and night to ensure public policy in Washington, D.C., Lansing, and our local communities every time puts patients first. I am looking forward to carrying on that important work, and ensuring Michigan is the best state in the nation to care for patients and practice medicine."
Doctor Gibson Fountain took office on Saturday, May 6, 2017 following her official election last year by the MSMS House of Delegates. During the 152nd annual House of Delegates meeting this past weekend in Grand Rapids, Doctor Gibson Fountain delivered her inaugural address, focusing on the ways MSMS is able to empower local physicians to better care and advocate for their patients.
Doctor Gibson Fountain is past president of the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan. She serves on the Michigan Maternal Mortality Surveillance Committee, the Detroit Regional Infant Mortality Reduction Task Force, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Physician and Professional Provider Contract Advisory Committee.
