Changes to Flu Recommendations for Upcoming Flu Season

On Wednesday, June 28, 2016, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted in favor of an interim recommendation that live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV), also known as the nasal spray flu vaccine, should not be used during the 2016-2017 flu season. ACIP continues to recommend annual flu vaccination, with either the inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) or recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV) for everyone six months and older.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Division of Immunization is working closely with the CDC to assure that an ample supply of Vaccines For Children (VFC) influenza vaccine will be available. Local Health Departments are working with VFC providers to switch pre-booked VFC FluMist to another product for the 2016-2017 flu season.

Providers who ordered FluMist private stock are to follow the guidance sent to them from the manufacturer or distributor.

Below are key points to provide some background for discussions with partners, stakeholders, and the media, from CDC and MDHHS Division of Immunizations.
