MSMS Board of Directors Addresses Team-based Care During Meeting

During the March meeting of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) Board of Directors, the Board addressed team-based care, upcoming meetings and conferences, resolutions for the upcoming House of Delegates, and more. Below are some of the highlights:

  • 2015 House of Delegates: The 150th Annual House of Delegates will now be two days, beginning on Saturday, May 2. The Ways and Means, and Rules and Order meeting will begin at 9 am with all other reference committees beginning at 10 am. With 78 resolutions, MSMS Delegates will explore discuss and debate a broad range of topics affecting health care in Michigan.
  • Team-based care and Senate Bill 68: The Legislative Policy Committee discussed the ongoing efforts to defeat Senate Bill 68 in the Senate. Efforts are still being made to make the necessary changes that retain physician involvement in decision-making. • "Health Reform Coverage Expansions: Impact of Insurance Exchanges & Medicaid Expansion on Michigan Health Plans": Caroline Pearson, Vice President, Avalere Health, provided an overview on state and national trends on the exchanges, Medicaid expansion and opportunities and challenges for the future. The Health Care Delivery Committee had a lengthy discussion throughout this presentation on high deductibles, high pharmacy costs, and narrow networks. Many expressed the need for health insurance literacy for patients with these new products. New product designs include max out of pocket and co-insurance which are not always transparent or easy to understand.
  • Supporting vaccinations and continued collaborations for community benefit: In the Scientific and Educational Affairs Committee, Matthew Davis, MD, Chief Medical Executive gave a presentation on Michigan’s New Immunization Administrative Waiver Rules. Based on recommendations from MSMS, the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, in December 2014, approved a new educational requirement for Michigan parents opting their children out of getting vaccinated before entering school which went in to effect January 1, 2015. Doctor Davis encouraged MSMS to continue to educate the public and reinforce a clear message supporting vaccinations and continue collaboration efforts for the community benefit.
