Repay Student Loans with NHSC Program

The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (Recovery Act) provides funding to support the National Health Service Corps (NHSC). The NHSC Loan Repayment Program assists physicians, dentists, and other primary care providers who are seeking opportunities to serve in our nation's neediest communities.

The NHSC is administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the US Government agency that provides access to health care for many in this nation. National Health Service Corps clinicians are a unique group of dedicated primary care providers who care for millions of people who live in communities where health care is scarce.

In exchange for two years of service at an eligible high-need site, the NHSC Loan Repayment program offers repayment of educational loans for clinicians who are providing full-time clinical services in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA). Up to $50,000 towards qualifying educational loan debt is available for those serving in HPSAs with scores of 14 and above. Providers serving in HPSAs with scores of 13 and below may qualify for up to $30,000 in loan repayment assistance. Clinicians who stay at their sites longer may be eligible to apply for additional years of support.

How to Apply:

Clinicians can apply for this NHSC opportunity at: www.nhsc.hrsa.gov. Or, for more information, call 800-221-9393 or email gethelp@hrsa.gov

Key Features:

Loan repayment awards to primary health care clinician applicants who are interested in loan repayment are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications are accepted until all Recovery Act funds are expended for the fiscal year.

The program is open to licensed primary care medical, dental, and mental and behavioral health providers who are employed or have accepted an offer of employment at an NHSC-approved site.

Several states, including Michigan, operate their own loan repayment programs, in cooperation with the NHSC.
