Earlier this week, more than 70 medical students from across Michigan came to the State Capitol in Lansing for the Michigan State Medical Society’s Medical Student Section Lobby Day. This annual event is meant to inspire students to become more politically aware and active in their society. Physicians have a tremendous ability to shape decisions around health policy and Medical Student Section Lobby Day provides students with an opportunity to experience this process early in their medical careers.
Throughout the day, medical students from Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Wayne State University, and Western Michigan University discussed GME funding, vaccinations, and reinstating the motorcycle helmet law with many lawmakers.
Gunjan Malhotra, a member of the class of 2016 from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, said "...if we aren't taking an active role in helping shape health policy, we aren't doing enough to improve health policy for the good of patients. Practicing medicine reaches far beyond the interactions in the clinic. On a day-to-day basis no one else sees the pitfalls in our medical system firsthand the way physicians do, so why shouldn't physicians be involved in helping solve the problems via policies?"
