Urge US Senators to Fix House-Passed Reconciliation Bill

Wednesday, June 4, 2025

The House recently adopted a reconciliation bill that includes important first steps to stabilize Medicare physician payments, however, other provisions in the legislation will severely restrict our ability to continue to care for our most vulnerable patients.

A May 20, 2025, letter from the American Medical Association identifies some of the Medicaid and ACA provisions that could create new barriers for eligible patients seeking coverage. Currently, Medicaid and CHIP provide access to critical health care services for almost 80 million Americans. In Michigan, Medicaid provides health care coverage to approximately 2.8 million people, including 1.1 million children.

If the Senate fails to strengthen the legislation by preserving Medicaid and ACA protections, millions of our country's most vulnerable patients are at risk of losing the access to care they so desperately need. The current version of the reconciliation bill also puts over $2 billion in federal funding to Michigan in 2026 at risk, as well as $4.9 billion in lost economic activity.

Additionally, the bill as currently drafted, would limit access to medical school loans and loan forgiveness programs—threatening the future of our physician workforce at a time of growing need.

Now is the time to act! Please take a moment to contact your Senators today and urge them to improve the reconciliation bill by:

  • Preserving access to Medicaid and ACA coverage for eligible individuals
  • Protecting medical education loan and forgiveness programs to strengthen the future physician workforce
  • Including support for long-term, inflation-adjusted Medicare payment reform.
