The Doctors Company: Retired Members Returning to Practice During COVID-19 Are Covered

Tuesday, March 24, 2020

As we work tirelessly to support those who deliver care, The Doctors Company is pleased to offer medical professional liability coverage to retired members of The Doctors Company returning to practice to help care for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. Coverage can be extended to those who volunteer their medical services and those who will provide billed services.

Those Volunteering to Provide Care
For physicians coming out of retirement to volunteer to care for patients, we will provide medical professional liability coverage at no cost. This offer is for retired health care professionals providing professional services for no fee, salary, or other compensation—with the exception of expenses incurred delivering those services. Coverage details include limits of $1 million/$3 million, defense costs paid in addition to limits, and regulatory action covered up to $50,000 with no deductible.

Practice to Bill for Services
For physicians coming out of retirement to provide billed medical services during the crisis, there are two options:

  • If the system or group is insured with The Doctors Company, we can, at the request of the group, provide coverage under the system or group policy for the requisite premium. Contact your underwriter directly so we can expedite the application process.
  • If the system or group the physician is assisting is not insured by The Doctors Company, the physician will need to seek coverage under the system’s or group’s insurance carrier.

Either way—volunteering or billing for services—returning to practice at this time has no impact on the retired member’s tail coverage or Tribute® Plan award.

If you are a retired member wanting to activate volunteer coverage, choose one of two options:
