The following is a public statement from Thomas Veverka, MD, FACS, president of the Michigan State Medical Society, in response to FDA and CDC approval of the updated version of the COVID-19 vaccine.

“The FDA and CDC’s approval of new omicron boosters is great news for Michigan residents who will soon be able to seek out and receive a vaccination providing far better protection against the latest version of the virus. The Michigan State Medical Society and its members urge Michigan residents over the age of twelve to be diligent in seeking out these booster shots in the coming weeks. Doing so will undoubtedly be the best way to protect against infection and serious illness this fall.

“The evidence has always been clear here: being vaccinated and boosted is the best way to stay protected from the harshest and most dangerous effects of COVID-19. And with a new booster soon available providing protection against the current dominant coronavirus variant, there’s no question that being boosted is the best way to ensure our families and loved ones remain safe and healthy.”
