As we gather with friends and family to celebrate Independence Day, Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) encourages everyone to keep safety top of mind while enjoying the festivities. Fireworks may be a beloved tradition, but they also pose serious risks, especially to children and young adults. Even sparklers, often seen as harmless, can burn at temperatures of around 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt metal, and are responsible for injuries and emergency room visits every year. According to the National Safety Council, thousands of people require medical treatment each summer due to fireworks-related incidents, many involving young children.
“Every year, we see devastating injuries from fireworks that could have been prevented with a little caution,” said Brad Uren, MD, emergency physician at the University of Michigan and MSMS Board Member. “It only takes a second for a celebration to turn into a tragedy. Keep celebrations safe and enjoyable for everyone, especially kids.”
Let’s celebrate responsibly this year by putting safety first—protecting ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities.
Wishing everyone a Healthy and Happy July 4th!
