Legislation (House Bill 6085 and Senate Bill 1158) to increase the caps for noneconomic damages in medical liability cases, as well as expand the number of exceptions resulting in the higher cap or no cap applying, is being considered by the Michigan House of Representatives and Senate.
Despite strong opposition from the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) and 37 other organizations representing health care professionals, hospitals, employers, and payors, as well as more than 5,400 grassroots contacts from physicians, Democratic leadership seems determined to put this issue up for a vote. Please keep the pressure on your legislators to VOTE NO and on your colleagues to encourage the same. If you have received confirmation from your representative and/or Senator that they oppose, please thank them for their support of our position. Every touch helps.
As the lame duck session is nearing completion, the status of bills can change quickly. The Legislature is anticipated to meet well into the night on each of the remaining scheduled days. This update is current as of 5:30 a.m., Friday, December 13, 2024.
What You Can Do:
- Tell your Representative and Senator to VOTE NO.
- Spread the word: Encourage your colleagues and your medical staffs to join this critical effort.
