Michael D. Chafty, MD, JD, was elected chair of the Michigan Board of Medicine during their January 15, Board of Medicine meeting. Doctor Chafty’s diverse medical and legal background will serve the Board well.
Doctor Chafty is a board-certified anesthesiologist, practicing pain medicine specialist, and Director of Kalamazoo Anesthesiology Pain Consultants in Portage, MI. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Anesthesiology, at the Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine.
Doctor Chafty formerly served for nine-years on the MSMS Board of Directors and currently serves as a Delegate on the Michigan Delegation to the American Medical Association.
According to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs’ website, “The Public Health Code mandates certain responsibilities and duties for a health professional licensing board. Underlying all duties is the responsibility of the board to promote and protect the public's health, safety, and welfare. This responsibility is implemented by the Board by ascertaining minimal entry level competency of medical doctors, and requiring continuing medical education during licensure. The Board also has the obligation to take disciplinary action against licensees who have violated the Michigan Public Health Code.”
The Michigan Board of Medicine consists of 19 voting members: 10 medical doctors, 1 physician's assistant, 1 genetic counselor, and 7 public members.
