Following the Health and Human Services Secretary’s decision to remove all 17 sitting members of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) and Michigan Association of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Physicians (MAPPP) released the statement below on June 12, 2025.
Historically, vaccination has played a critical role in the prevention and control of infectious diseases, leading to the eradication of several diseases, and significant reductions in illnesses and fatalities for others. For decades, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has saved countless lives by providing vital guidance and recommendations to parents, physicians and public health professionals after a thorough and independent scientific review. To date, ACIP meetings had public agendas, public meetings, public comment, conflict of interest assessment and public disclosures.
“In light of the HHS Secretary’s decision, we believe it’s critical to highlight the decades of medical progress in providing lifesaving vaccines to children and adults and reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding individual and public health now and well into the future,” said Dr. Amit Ghose, President of the Michigan State Medical Society.
“Vaccines are rigorously studied for safety and one of the most effective and cost-saving health interventions in history. We firmly commit to assist the public in finding timely, accurate and fact-based information on vaccination to ensure the health of all Michiganders,” said Dr. William Nettleton of the Michigan Association of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Physicians.
MSMS and MAPPP want to reiterate that their respective organizations are firmly committed to promoting the continued use of vaccines in ensuring a healthier population in Michigan.
