Implicit Bias Training: Monday Night Medicine

This fall, the Michigan State Medical Society Foundation’s Monday Night Medicine Series will once again cover implicit bias training, fulfilling this new licensure requirement. Nneka Sederstrom, PhD, MPH, MA, FCCP, FCCM, will present on equitable access to health care, serving diverse populations, diversity and inclusion in health care, cultural sensitivity and more. The first session, October 3 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, will provide a brief history of racism and set the foundation of health disparities. The second session, November 7 from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, will address biases and understanding how “you bring you” into the room with patients, along with some techniques on how to upfront those biases and begin trust building. Each session is approved for 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™.

Doctor Sederstrom is the Chief Health Equity Officer for Hennepin Healthcare. Prior to joining Hennepin, she was Director of the Clinical Ethics Department at Children’s Minnesota. Additionally, she was Director of the Center for Ethics at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC, where she also led the Spiritual Care Department and was the creator and Executive Director of the Journal of Hospital Ethics. She is a recognized national speaker on many topics including racism, racial disparities, bias, crisis standards of care and treatment, end-of-life care, and many aspects of diversity and ethics.
