House Health Policy Committee:
On October 22, 2025, the House Health Policy Committee approved House Bills 4790 (S-1) and 4791, regarding women’s midlife health. MSMS collaborated with the bill sponsor to support the goal of improving women’s health during menopause while avoiding mandatory CME requirements. The Committee also took up House Bills 4896 and 4925, concerning licensure for international medical graduates, for testimony only. MSMS is closely monitoring these bills.
Senate Health Policy Committee:
The Senate Health Policy Committee heard testimony and approved Senate Resolution 81 at its meeting on October 23, 2025. The Resolution urges Congress and the President to permanently extend the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax credits to maintain affordable healthcare coverage for Michigan families. MSMS supports this resolution and put in a card of support with the committee clerk.
Behind the Scenes:
The bigger news is happening off the record. MSMS has it on good authority that the House Health Policy Committee plans to move House Bill 4399 next week — legislation that would allow nurse practitioners to practice medicine without physician supervision. The committee is expected to adopt a substitute version that includes a 1,000-hour training requirement — a concession in name only that fails to address the core concerns of patient safety and quality of care.
MSMS urges all members to contact their legislators once again and encourage friends, family, and colleagues to do the same to protect patient safety and uphold high standards of medical practice.
Upcoming opportunities to meet locally with your legislators:
Legislator coffee hours offer a great opportunity to ask questions, share your perspective, and hear firsthand updates from Lansing. Building and maintaining relationships with your elected officials is critical, as they appreciate being able to turn to their local physicians as a trusted resource when deliberating on policies that affect our communities and our profession.
