AMA Sends Letter of Appreciation to Sponsors of Surprise Out-of-Network Billing Legislation

Tuesday, July 2, 2019

On July 1, 2019, the American Medical Association (AMA) sent a letter to U.S. Representatives Paul Ruiz of California and Phil Roe of Tennessee to express appreciation for sponsoring the “Protecting People from Surprise Medical Bills Act of 2019.”  While AMA has refrained from fully endorsing the legislation, they – along with the Michigan State Medical Society – support the framework and are dedicated to continuing to work with the sponsors and other partners to build on the legislation’s growing momentum. While several related bills have been introduced and are under discussion in Congress, this legislation – based on the successful New York model – is the most balanced approach introduced so far to address surprise out-of-network medical bills.
