The House of Delegates (HOD) is the official legislative and policy-making body of the Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS). The next HOD meeting will be held on May1, 2021 as a virtual session.
Resolutions debated during the annual MSMS HOD are the vehicles by which MSMS policies, priorities, and directives are determined. This year's deadline for submission is 5:00 p.m. on Monday, March 1, 2021. Resolutions must be submitted via the online submission form. If you have any questions, contact Stacey Hettiger or (517) 336-5766.
The best way to get your idea or recommendation adopted as a Society policy or directive is at the grassroots level. As a member in good standing, you have the right to bring your ideas to the annual HOD for consideration by the Society's "legislators." To do so, present your suggestion and rationale at your county medical society, specialty society, or section meeting. If the county, specialty society, or section agrees, they will work with you to draft a resolution to be presented at the next HOD meeting. The resolution should specify the desired Society policy or directive for Society action. You may also ask another delegate to submit a resolution on your behalf as an individual delegate. It is also prudent to check the Society's current Policy Manual and, if relevant, the AMA Policy Finder to determine if policy on the issue already exists.
MSMS Resolution Review Committee
As a reminder, the HOD voted to replicate the 2020 virtual MSMS HOD, which limited consideration of those resolutions deemed to be urgent or time sensitive. Therefore, a Resolution Review Committee will vet resolutions to identify those that are time sensitive and must be acted on yet this year, and those that can be postponed until 2022. The intent of narrowing the number of resolutions is solely due to time constraints and the online format, and not intended to be an assessment of the resolution’s merit. The criteria for determining if a resolution will be reviewed this year will include:
- Is the resolution time sensitive?
- Will this policy or “ask” be needed before April 2022?
- Is there existing policy that already covers all or some of the same intent?
- Is the resolution already being addressed by MSMS or regular staff work?
- Can the resolution be addressed within MSMS in another venue like an MSMS Committee or regular staff work?
