‘Dr. Ron Davis Smoke Free Air Law’ Takes Effect May 1 MSMS and other supporters of smoke-free air can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel as the “Dr. Ron Davis Smoke Free Air Law” will take effect on May 1. The law was named after the late Ronald M. Davis, MD, a longtime smoke-free air advocate. For more than a decade, advocates like Doctor Davis, lawmakers, and organizations like MSMS have been fighting for a smoke-free workplace law. Michigan will become the 38th smoke-free state on this date and will be protecting most Michigan workers. Michigan’s law will be one of the country’s strongest and will include all workplaces, except Detroit casino gaming floors, existing cigar bars and tobacco specialty shops, home offices, and work vehicles. Through its Future of Medicine [pdf] initiative, MSMS was a member of the Campaign for Smokefree Air, a coalition of more than 250 organizations that fought to pass this law. To explain the implementation of the new law, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) is providing resources and support through its website (www.michigan.gov/smokefreelaw) and toll-free hotline (866-59-SMOKE or 866-597-6653). Information includes exemptions allowed; frequently asked questions; tools for business owners; and tobacco dependence treatment information.
