MSMS Seeks Board of Medicine Nominations
MSMS is seeking physicians to recommend to the Governor’s Office for a four-year term of service on the Michigan Board of Medicine. There are currently three positions available for appointment. MSMS encourages you to submit names of qualified individuals you believe would help serve the needs of our state to MSMS for consideration. The application deadline is June 10.

Auto No-Fault Bill Speeds Out of House Committee
The House Insurance Committee recently passed House Bill 4612, introduced by Committee Chair Rep. Pete Lund on a party line vote. The bill will gut Michigan’s auto no-fault law and replace it with a system that relies on expensive lawsuits, higher health insurance premiums for families and a cost shift from insurance companies onto the state’s Medicaid system.

Patient's Right to Know Bill Promotes Transparency
MSMS supports legislation from state Rep. Gail Haines that would give patients transparency and empower them to take control of their health. The bill requires medical professionals to wear and display their credentials both in the office and/or hospital, as well as in any advertising promoting their services.

Keep Pressure on Lawmakers to Expand Medicaid
Despite resistance in both chambers of the legislature to include a Medicaid expansion in the state budget currently being debated, MSMS and a coalition of others continue working with lawmakers to expand Medicaid eligibility and bump the program’s rates to that of Medicare, as proffered in the Affordable Care Act. If adopted, the expansion would cover approximately 450,000 additional lives.

Next Stop for Commonsense Prior Auth Bills? The Governor’s Desk!
The Michigan House passed SB 178 and 179, which were born in response to calls from Michigan physicians to improve patients’ access to the best care by creating a universal prior authorization form for prescription drugs. The bills, championed by Sen. Schuitmaker and Rep. Haines, now head to the governor’s desk for signature.

Tanning Bills Put Kids First by Banning Minors frmo Tanning Facilities
MSMS hosted a news conference to emphasize the importance of passing bills that would ban minors from tanning facilities. Speakers included Michigan Dermatological Society Immediate Past President & MSMS member Kay Watnick, MD; Anne Goulet, Doctor Watnick's patient who was diagnosed with skin cancer at age 19; and Rep Jim Townsend, who sponsored HB 4404 & 4405.

Applications for Loan Repayment Accepted through June
The Michigan State Loan Repayment Program provides loan repayment assistance to medical, dental, and mental health care providers who enter into MSLRP service obligations. These require participants to provide primary health care to ambulatory populations at sites located in Health Professional Shortage Areas for two years. The 2013 application period: April 1 to June 30.

MSMS Report Profiles 8 Practices' Efforts to Stem Child Obesity
MSMS has commissioned a report: “Child Obesity Assessment & Management - A Study to Guide Michigan Physicians.” It includes eight case studies that profile pediatric and family practices, school-based programs, and other settings to capture the actual experience of Michigan physicians and their partners as they assess and manage children with obesity.
